Now that you're home, you decide to create two materials to help you better understand the Golden Rectangle, the Golden Spiral, and the Fibonacci Sequence found in nature. To start, you're going to need the following items:

  • one 18" x 18" sheet of Fun Foam
  • ruler
  • fine tipped permanent marker
  • scissors
  • string or yarn
  • pinecone
  • art paint & brush

The first material you are going to create is an Art Foam Golden Rectangle. First measure two one-inch squares, a two-inch square, a three-inch square, a five-inch square, an eight-inch square, and a thirteen-inch square. Cut these out and place them as the diagram shows to the right. Lay the string along the corners as shown. Now you can see the Golden Spiral lying along the Golden Rectangle!

The next material that you will make is a pinecone showing the spirals and the Fibonacci numbers. First begin labeling the petals in the order that you think they opened. The tiny straight petal at the very top is "0". The next one is "1" and so on. When you are finished numbering, begin painting the petals that end in zero or five yellow. Paint the ones that end in one or six red. Paint the ones that end in two or seven green. Paint the petals than end in three or eight orange. Finally, paint the petals that end in four or nine blue. You should be able to see the spirals and your pinecone should look like the one on the right. Notice that any two adjacent petals will add or subtract to make a Fibonacci number.

At last you are ready to type your manuscript of your journey. Write an article for a history magazine telling of your travels and what you have learned. Include background facts about Fibonacci, the Fibonacci sequence, and where these patterns are found in nature, art, and architecture. Refer to the Teacher Page for the grading rubric. Your article needs to be at least ten paragraphs with pictures or diagrams. Sources need to be cited. All spelling, grammar, and punctuation needs to be correct.
