Geometric Shapes
In conjunction with a geometry unit, the students will need experiences using their geometry skills in real-life situations. Students will research current trends in playground construction, including safety measures, cost, space, material, and design. Once the information is gathered, the students will build a small 3D model of their ideal playground. Finally, the students will create a PowerPoint presentation to propose their ideas and back up their decisions with research.

Objectives:
1. Students will research using the internet to address a problem.
2. Students will utilize geometry and math skills acquired to create a model to scale.
3. Students will create a persuasive piece using presentation software with pictures, work cited, graphs, and statistics to back up their arguments.

ISTE NETS (http://cnets.iste.org) addressed:

Students 3, 4, 5, 6
Teachers II, III
Administrators II

The resources used will guide students through websites where they can learn about playground safety, environmental issues with building, and new trends in playground equipment. While gathering the information, students will also have access to pictures that will help them with building their own model and for their PowerPoint presentation.

Development:
Each group will have a chart with a set of questions specific for their particular focus. Each group will need to come up with their top three choices of equipment and/or building material and be able to back up their choices. The charts are at the end of this artifact report.

Implementation:
Once the groups have their top three choices, the class will come together and begin working out the best choices that meet all of their criteria. This may involve going “back to the drawing board” several times. Once the class has agreed upon certain equipment, they can begin drawing and constructing a model of their ideal playground. The model will need to be to scale and will need to be stable, hence the geometry and math components. Finally, the children will create a PowerPoint presentation showing examples of equipment that they would like to see on their playground and how they came to these decisions.

Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated by the rubric following this report. This project will facilitate student learning in a number of areas. They will see a true need for their math skills. They will begin the lifelong process of having a problem presented to them and having to solve the problem and convince others that they have done so. The internet will provide information and pictures that would have otherwise been very time-consuming to gather. The PowerPoint presentation will give children practice in preparing persuasive arguments with facts to back up their ideas.
